I just posted a new comparison that might be a bit of a reality check for some of us. I put the Leica 50mm f/1.4 Summilux (Close Focus) head to head  against the Voigtlander 50mm f/1.0 Nokton to see if the price gap actually translates to the final image. You can check out the full breakdown and samples here: Leica vs. Voigtlander: 50mm Summilux vs. 50mm f/1.0 Nokton A few things to wa ... Read the article

Since first being introduced in 1966, the name ‘Noctilux’ has represented the pinnacle of optical craftsmanship at Leica. The name is made up of the Latin words ‘noctu’ and ‘lux’, meaning ‘night’ and ‘light’, and refers to the exceptional speed of this lens series. With a maximum aperture of up to f/0.95, Noctilux lenses are considered to ... Read the article

The upcoming new Noctilux is just around the corner. Here are the real pictures and some sample images as well. This looks like an inredible lens and we can't wait to get our hands on one for comparing it to the Zeiss 35mm 1.4 ZM Distagon. Yes this is a Noctilux but is the 1.2 offering that much more than a 1.4? We won't know till we test it and give an honest opinion. None the less, here are mor ... Read the article

The Zeiss 35mm f/1.4 ZM. The Undisputed King of the M11 Sensor As you may know, I am a lover of the 50mm focal length and that is what I mainly shoot with. However, after needing to use a 35 the other day, I grabbed my trusty Zeiss 35 Distagon ZM. After seeing the results it produced, I felt compelled to write about it and why I still think it's the best 35 for the M system. We all know there is a pervasive myth that the most expensive glass from Leica represents the undisputed ceiling of pe ... Read the story

Can You Tell the Difference Between Leica and Voigtlander at f/1.4? This blog post has an interesting story behind it. It all came to be after I recently received a new 50mm Summilux close focus version. After shooting with it I started to wonder why I wasn't totally blown away. Then I thought it was because the results were not that more impressive than those from my 50mm Voigtlander 1.0 Nokton. Now here is the sad part. I couldn't find my Nokton. I searched high and low for it and to this da ... Read the story

With the current atmosphere in the Leica community, largely dominated by the fever pitch surrounding the new 35mm Noctilux, I felt compelled to write up this short review of the Voigtlander 35mm f/1.2 IV. Before we dive into the images, let’s clear the air. In the wake of the Leica 35mm Noctilux announcement, I’ve seen a wave of comments jumping to conclusions without having seen a single side by side comparison. To be absolutely clear,  this is not a comparison between the Lei ... Read the story

There is a specific kind of magic that happens when you mount a piece of legendary Nikon iron onto the digital pinnacle of the Leica M system. Following the success of our stress test with the 50mm f/1.2 AIS, it was only natural to turn our attention to its longer, more refined sibling, the Nikon 105mm f/2.5 AIS. This lens isn't just a relic,  it’s a giant killer. Famous for capturing Steve McCurry’s "Afghan Girl," the 105mm f/2.5 is a masterpiece of optical simplicity a lens k ... Read the story
